Peace be upon you. We are honored very much Bram Lee to your agreement to make interview in Desigg.com. Bram Lee Chin Horng is from Malaysia . he has 23 years. His works characteristics by imagination, clean and shining. He is a freelance artist for illustrator and concept artist. We hope that the interview be useful to you.
1- Introduce yourself /full name/age/country/work. My name is Bram Lee Chin Horng, 23 this year, allocated at Selangor, Malaysia. I am currently working as a Compositor and Lighting artist in a CG studio in Malaysia. After work I am a freelance illustrator and concept artist. 4- What skills and technologies are you interested in learning? I am interested in learning more skills and techniques in matte painting, and compositing in more high end software like Nuke or Flame, as I am a After Effect user for many years, I think it is about time I move on to something more complicated. 5- Illustration that was your study field or taught it out of your study? I actually graduated a CG Animator, I learned most of my painting skills during my foundation year in the college, we were trained to use traditional medium to paint and draw. During my second year, I was introduced to CG Painting by my friends who share the same interest in illustration, I watched tutorials and read articles about CG Illustration to strengthen my skills ever since.
6- What are Software and tools you use? What’s tablet you use in painting? Why? I used Photoshop for all my paintings, I tried Painter before but i guess it is just not my kind of painting tool despite the variety of brushes it has, Photoshop is easier in file saving and the sizes are always smaller, and easier for me to apply any textures I want into my painting. I am using a Wacom Intuos 4 medium size at the studio and Wacom Intuos 3 medium size at home. 7- From your work we notice that you interested in kid’s style and manga characters in your painting. Where from you inspired your ideas? What are the sites you follow it daily? During my days working in the comic’s studio, I was advised to create comics that are more appealing to the young readers, nowadays Manga seems to be the mainstream comic that Asian kids read, therefore, I spent quite a lot of time exploring techniques to draw and paint Manga style, so it somehow affected my drawing style. DeviantArt.com and CGTalk.com is the two websites that I will follow daily.
8- “Oh My Gosh” from the Greatest of your artworks. How did you got the idea? And how long normally take you to finish awesome draw like that one? Thank you very much for the compliment. I was trying to depict the imagination of most artists which is to change the world around them with their art. This painting took me about 4-5 days on and off, as I was kinda busy working and I only had a few hours of spare time to work on it, if I had whole day, I think I should probably be able to finish a painting like this fast. 9- What you think about artist who use more than 2 software for one image ? Is it kill his creative or help? I think what matters in a creative process is not the tools, it is the ideas that the artists are trying to convey through their artworks, therefore I think it is perfectly normal for a digital artist to use more than one software to create his/her work. For instance, a 3D illustrator could use Maya or 3D Max to model; render it in V-ray or Mental Ray and composite in Photoshop or After Effect. 10-It is Easy for any talented can be professional by learn graphics from sites only ? What’s your advice for beginners in digital art ? I personally think that other than learning from tutorial sites, finding a design school that suits you to get a proper education in art and design is very important as well. Because being in a school or a learning environment with peers would somehow create a healthy pressure for you to improve yourself as well as to surpass your peers. And also with professionals from the field to guide you and lead you to the right path is better than you searching for the correct direction alone.
11- Most of your works are for kids !! is that’s your hobby or books..etc commissions ? Hahaha, yeah, it is pretty much my hobby to paint and draw kids; it will sort of bring back some beautiful childhood memories. It makes me happy and I tried to put as much as happiness in the illustrations so that the viewers will feel the joy as well when they are looking at my work. 12- Is your creative dependence on your mood? Which times are you prefer to work (day/night)? Yeah actually, I usually work at day, if it is a rainy morning, it is better, there is a thing about rainy day, it somehow makes me more creative. 14- Everyone have a purpose to achieve it by his work. What the purpose from your work? I tried to add in small details as well as storyline into most of my paintings, I like the viewers to think what is gonna happen, or what have happened or what the characters are gonna do, trying to interact with them, and at the same time, convey messages that I want to tell them. 15- What things you do to turn off your mind away work? What are your hobbies? I like to make miniature of houses with my friends during my free time, not to sit in front of the computer too much.
16- Imagine that the world became one union country and offer to you to create a logo for country’s flag. What’s to be your idea? I think would keep it simple and just give it a white circle in a middle of a light blue flag, since light blue is often tranquility and peace. The white circle represents the world but without any borders in term of geographic structures, cultures, languages, beliefs as well as religions.
17- What’s your personal Advice ? My headmaster in the college used to tell me this, “if you are talented, then you are half way there in the path of success, and if you are talented and hardworking, you will be a superhuman artist”, it might sound a bit weird as I translated it directly from Chinese, but I think it pretty much explained itself already. This sentence have been in my brain ever since, working hard is very important.
Finally, we thank you Mr. Bram Lee Chin Horng for giving desigg.com a part of your time ,we hope all success in your work and life.
